Fall Parents' Weekend
a BIG Success

Dear Tau Trustees, Alumni & Parents,

Thank you for making this year's rush campaign one of the Tau Chapter's most successful ever.  We are extremely excited to welcome 48 new pledges to our already incredible chapter.  Our rush team and executive council did an outstanding job and everyone's hard work paid off.  I personally had a really great time getting to know so many of you through phone calls, personal visits and emails and look forward to further developing the relationships we've built for future efforts.

Our success would not have been possible without your support and generosity.  Thank you for this great experience and I look forward to seeing you during Parents' Weekend if not sooner.

Who is the Tau Man of the
Year for 2013?

Here are some clues:

  • He's the youngest of four brothers -- all Kappa Sigs who graduated from UT.
  • On Texas Independence Day 1973, he fired the last cannon ever to be shot from the original Tau Chapter House on West 19th Street
  • He created and developed a software company that became a global leader in its field, which he sold to a multinational corporation in 2012.
  • He loves playing golf -- almost as much as he loves being a Kappa Sig.

Whether you've guessed by now the 2013 Tau Man of the Year, be sure to attend the Tau Trustee & Alumni Reunion on November 2 to celebrate this outstanding Kappa Sig who's done so much for the Tau Chapter.  There's no one more deserving of this award than this year's honoree.

Beauford H. Jester '47 to be Honored Posthumously by
the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation

Beauford H. Jester, the 36th governor of Texas, will also be celebrated as Tau Man of the Year on November 2, 2013.

null Jester became the 36th governor of Texas on January 21, 1947. As governor, he helped implement the most extensive education reforms up to that time in Texas through the 1949 Gilmer-Aiken Act, the first comprehensive system for Texas school funding.

null Prior to becoming governor, Jester was appointed to the University of Texas System Board of Regents in 1925 and was chosen as Chairman of the Board in 1933, a position he held through 1935. During his tenure he promoted a UT building program that included the tower of the Main Building, Hogg Auditorium, the Texas Union, Memorial Stadium, Gregory Gymnasium and the expansion of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

null On July 11, 1949, Governor Jester died of an apparent heart attack aboard a Pullman railroad car while traveling to Galveston for a speaking engagement.  He was the first Texas governor to die while in office.

Jester Center on the University of Texas campus was named in his honor in 1968. It is the largest residential facility on campus, housing close to 3,000 students, as well as classroom and faculty space.

The Star and Crescent, Kappa Sigma's ideals, are centered on four pillars:  Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship and Service.

null Kappa Sigmas are taught to live their lives by the Star and Crescent, which are the symbols of the Fraternity that make up the official badge:  "The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by every man, but only by him who is worthy to wear it.  He must be a gentleman... a man of honor and courage... a man of zeal, yet humble... an intelligent man... a man of truth... one who tempers action with wisdom and, above all else, one who walks in the light of God."

Texas Female Vocalist of the Year Bri Bagwell Slated for Benefit Concert

Tau Chapter Sponsors Horns for Heroes Concert to Benefit Navy SEALS Foundation

null Country music recording artist Bri Bagwell, whose new release "She Ain't Leavin!" just hit #1 on the Texas Music Chart, will perform live at Kappa Sigma Tau Chapter's fundraising event to benefit the Navy SEALs' Legacy Foundation.  This very special event is scheduled for November 8 at Antone's in Austin.
Bagwell has written a song dedicated to the Navy SEALs, scheduled for national release on November 7.  She will donate a portion of the proceeds from each iTunes download to the SEAL Legacy Foundation.  Here is one of her recent music videos entitled "Whiskey"

Bagwell attended the University of Texas on a volleyball scholarship and lives in Austin.  Her twin brothers and father are Kappa Sigs (Nu Epsilon Chapter, New Mexico State).
The November 8 Horns for Heroes event will be catered, with happy hour served from 5 to 6 PM. Those attending will have the opportunity to meet and talk with active and former Navy SEALs and Ms. Bagwell.  Tickets will go on sale soon for $30 each, with a limited number of VIP tables for four to be offered at $500 a table.  VIP tickets will include two complimentary drink tickets per person, complimentary catered dinner and VIP concert seating.

For further information, contact event coordinator Alex Amato.
Our warmest thanks to Kevin Kaplan, former Kappa Sigma Fraternity Grand Master of Ceremonies, for making this wonderful event possible!

The SEAL Legacy Foundation is a 501(C)(3), nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to families of wounded and fallen United States Navy SEALs, educational assistance for SEALs and their families, and other charitable causes benefiting the SEAL community. The Foundation was established in 2011 by SEALs to preserve their legacy of no one left behind.

Parents News

Dear Kappa Sigma Families,

Welcome to a fabulous year with the Kappa Sigma Tau Chapter!  The Parents' Association supports the Kappa Sigs in so many ways, including the organization of two Parents' Weekends, fall gatherings, and the distribution of a complete directory for members and parents to enjoy.  Funds raised and donations given during Parents' Weekends are used mostly for parent event expenses and to fulfill some of the "wish list" requests for the chapter.

Wade Kilpatrick and the Hot Flashes

This year's Fall Parents' Weekend is slated for November 1 and 2.  Here's a preview of this FUN weekend:  Friday evening will be a party enjoyed by your son and his parents at the Kappa Sigma Lodge.   Saturday we will have brunch, introduce the new pledges and honor the "Tau Man of the Year" with the Tau Trustees and Tau Alumni.  We will have an auction to raise money for the Lodge and Chapter House, so start thinking of an item or service to donate.  Consider putting together a gift basket or donating a weekend getaway.  The auction helps fund many of the items we purchase for the chapter.  Following the game, we will dance the night away to Tau's own Wade Kilpatrick and the Hot Flashes, back by popular demand.

Please remember to sign up to receive your Tau eNEWS and Kappa Sigma Parents' updates by clicking the green UPDATE YOUR PROFILE button on this site and entering your contact information.  It is very quick and simple to do, and you don't want to miss these informative updates from Kappa Sigma Tau and the Parents Association!

I look forward to seeing you November 1!  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or let me know if I can be of help to you or your son.
