Former UT System Chancellor Dan Burck '51 Chosen as Kappa Sigma International Man of the Year and Other Big News Slated for 2015

Dear Tau Trustees, Alumni, Parents & Actives,

It gives me great pleasure to bring you several items of great news:

R.D. Burck First, I'm proud to announce that Dan Burck '51 has been named Kappa Sigma's 2015 International Man of the Year.  Dan was chosen from a field of highly accomplished Kappa Sigma alumni throughout the nation for this award by the Supreme Executive Committee of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  He follows a distinguished list of Tau alumni who have achieved Kappa Sigma's highest honor, preceded by former American Airlines president Cyrus Smith (1937), former Texas Governor Beauford H. Jester (1947), renowned heart surgeon Denton Cooley '38, MD (1964), financier Richard Rainwater '63 (1996), and artist, writer, film producer Bill Wittliff '59 (2012). For more information about Dan Burck, please visit the KΣ Man of the Year site at www.KappaSigma.org

On behalf of the Tau Chapter, I extend my warmest congratulations to Brother Burck. Plans are underway for a celebration on March 28, 2015, in Austin. Please save this date and look for more information to follow in January.

Another landmark event scheduled for 2015 concerns the Tau Chapter House. After years of discussion, debate and promises, and with careful consideration by the TKSEF Board and Tau Trustees, and input from engineers and architects, it has been determined that the current house is no longer adequate. The Board has concluded that a new facility is the best long-term investment and the time to move forward is now.  Plans are set to demolish the current structure next May and begin construction on a new living facility in the vision outlined several years ago.

To raise the needed funds, a capital campaign is soon to be launched under the fulltime direction of Kappa Sigma Tau Chapter alumnus Willie Madden '84, a former Grand Master who is passionate about the fraternity and has an impressive track record as a fundraiser. You will be hearing more soon about a projected timeline and architectural plans for the new house as they develop.

The construction will be managed by Hagen McMahon '66 and Mike Sharpe '79. Bob Ellis, owner/founder of Southwest Corporation, one of the leading commercial construction companies in the Austin area, will serve as an advisor on all aspects of the construction. Ellis is the father of Tau Chapter active Robert Ellis '13.

As brothers of the finest fraternity on the UT campus and one of the most successful chapters among Kappa Sigma worldwide, we have much to be proud of and grateful for. The new year promises to be an exciting and pivotal one for Tau Chapter and I look forward to it with great enthusiasm.

Whether you're a trustee, alumnus, parent, or active, your participation and support are what got us to this point and what will keep us moving forward. Thank you for all that you do to make the Tau Chapter what it is today.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2015.

Bob "Daddy-O" Wade '61 Honored at Lone Star Film Gala
Artist Bob Wade and filmmaker
Julian Schnabel

Bob "Daddy-O" Wade was among an elite group of internationally renowned artists celebrated for their achievements in film, music and art at the fifth annual Lone Star Film Festival Ball in Fort Worth on November 7.

The Lone Star Film Society awarded Wade, a photographer, painter, sculptor and lecturer, the Visionary Award for his outstanding contributions to the arts. Wade is best known for his oversized sculptures of Texas symbols and his unique reinvention of rare and famous photographs, which he enlarges, crops, prints on photo linen and, with painstaking detail, hand-tints, using transparent layers of acrylic paint.

Wade earned a BFA from UT Austin and an MA from the University of California, Berkeley.  He has produced three books, received three NEA grants and his work has been included in Biennials in Paris, France; New Orleans, LA; and the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY.

Other artists honored at this year's Lone Star Film Gala were Asleep-at-the-Wheel's Ray Benson, artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, and actress Tatum O'Neal.
